Yan Zhuang - The New York Times

Yan Zhuang

I work for the Express team at The Times, a department with staff on three continents tasked with jumping on breaking news. I write about news from around the world that happens while readers are asleep in the United States, as well as stories that are just fun, trending, quirky and thought-provoking.

I graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Arts and got my start in journalism at The Age newspaper in Melbourne. I joined The Times’s Australia bureau in 2020, covering breaking news, features and the occasional slice of life story, before moving to the Seoul bureau in 2024. I speak English and Mandarin.

My work is governed by The Times’s ethics policy, and by a commitment to writing with accuracy, fairness, empathy and nuance. I protect my sources. I make every effort to understand issues from multiple angles. When I am working, I always identify myself as a reporter for The Times.
